Power tools are standard across all types of industrial occupations, from construction sites to factories. Some power tools have general uses, such as a drill, but others are geared toward specific tasks, such as a jigsaw or various nailers. These tools are a standard for the efficiency they provide and accuracy, which is isn't possible with hand tools. Outside of construction, a similar object would be a sewing machine in comparison to hand-sewing cloth. Why waste the time when you can do the task quicker and more accurately by a machine-powered tool?
Power tools come in two types, stationary and portable, and are powered by three different methods: electric motor, compressed air, and gasoline engine. For the typical hand-held tool, an electric motor is most common, followed by compressed air. The latter, in fact, was once applied mostly to paint sprayers and nailers but many standard tools like drills and hammers are now being made as air tools by manufacturers like Campbell Hausfeld. A compressor is needed to power these, while a generator is needed for most corded electric tools. Battery powered tools are another type of portable tool and these give users the convenience of efficiently taking them anywhere around a large work area.
The downside to using power tools is the vibration and noise. To combat excessive vibrations, some companies like Makita and Hitachi have created lower vibration tools. These tools, while being just as efficient, do not vibrate as much while in use, and the user, as a result, can have a better grip on them. As far as noise levels are concerned, workers should consider hearing protection, as most tools go up to the hearing limit of 85dB and some can go higher.
If you work in an industrial occupation, power tools are used by nearly everyone. Whether it's a saw or a screwdriver, the cut or the hole can be done quicker and cleaner. As speed and quality are two important qualities in all work environments, using power tools for any task in a construction or industrial environment is necessary to keep pace.
