Want to get into a tabletop RPG. How do I go about it?
I'm interested in WH40K, D&D, Shadowrun, CoC and VtR and WtF from the WoD.
I figured that the best way to go about this would be to find a gaming shop in my area. Surprise surprise, there ARE NONE. Well, there's one. But it's tiny, nearly devoid of merchandise and apparently visited rarely by anyone.
I don't have any friends that I could start a game with, before that's suggested.
With this situation I find myself in I believe I must rely upon you, oh citizens of the internet. Kindly assist me with my problem.
One more thing: I'm 15. Material that I have found on the internet has lead me to believe that younger people such as myself aren't usually welcome in these games. True/False?
Thank you.
Check to see if there are any roleplaying (or tabletop gaming in general) clubs nearby. Even if it's too far away for a regular game night, it's often a good route to meet fellow gamers, some of whom might live nearer you, or know other people who are.
Advertise! Your friendly neighbourhood game store may be poorly-stocked, but they'll probably have a "contact board" to help people recruit for their group, or indeed form groups. You can use websites like RPG.net for the same purpose. If you don't immediately find anyone in your area to play with, you can also trying looking online for people to play with by skype. Also consider advertising in your school; even if there are no established roleplayers there at all, there may be enough other people that are "curious", like yourself.
There is some truth to your anxiety about the age issue; there's plenty of stereotyping abroad of younger players, and the sort of style of play they're supposed to favour. But equally, not everyone is so prejudiced; some groups will be open-minded enough to give you a "fair trial". An all-college-age group might be particularly wary (or snobby) about a younger player. But gaming styles and preferences inevitably vary, so be prepared to try several different groups if necessary, to find one that mutally suits.
