Should I re-sand my table completely?
Alright, I am building a poker table and have a center racetrack that I stained and started applying poly to. I never did any word working or varnishing so I need some help. The first two coats of poly were thin and applied with a foam brush. The area is not "well" ventalated but most dust should have been settled. I wasn't thinking and went to build something for my daughter and sanded it down leaving lots of dust particles in the air, and I then applied a thick coat of poly. Now i have plenty of little bumps and specs all over the table. Would my best bet be to sand it all down with 220 grit sanding block? sand down a little and wipe a thin coat on with a rag? Open to all answers thanks.
Depends on how mucked it got.
You may get away with a light sanding...you may have to begin at the beginning. Be sure to let coats dry thoroughly and sand between coats 00 steel wool works great too. Always wipe with a soft damp rag. Small foam rollers actually work best for application.
A trick to getting poly to level and flow nicely is to be sure the poly is warmer then the room temp. This can be done by decanting into your tray and putting the tray in the sun for a few minutes.
I find, when curing poly between coats, tenting with a trap keeps out the inevitable dust or curious child's thumbprint. I normally let the poly cure for 24 hours before I apply another coat. It takes 7 days after applying the final coat before I put the object in use and 30 days before it's allowed to have anything on it permanently.
