Nightfall: the town's chromatic nocturne wakes
dark brilliance on the river; colours drift
and tremble as enormous shadows lift
Orion to his place. The heart remarks
that peace torn in the blaze of day. Inside
your room are music, warmth and wine, the board
with chessmen set fopr play. The harpsichord
begins a fugue; delight is multiplied.
A game: the heart's impossible ideal--
to choose among a host of paths, and know
that if the kingdom crumbles one can yield
and have the choice again. Abstract and real
joined in their trance of thought, two players show
the calm of gods above a troubled field.
The poem is a sonnet that uses a variation on the Petrarchan or Italian rhyme scheme. (Libby is wrong. Blank verse does not use any rhymes, but this poem does.)
Some of the rhymes are easy to spot. For example, in the first eight lines, you can hear that drift/lift and board/harpsichord are rhymes. Also inside/multiplied. All of those are perfect rhymes. There's just one example in those eight lines of "near rhyme" (also called "off rhyme" and "slant rhyme," among other terms) -- wakes/remarks. Those words don't rhyme perfectly like wakes/bakes and remarks/parks. But the "ks" sound at the end of both words makes them similar enough that they can be considered near rhymes.
So the rhyme scheme of those first eight lines is ABBA CDDC.
You should be able to figure out the rhymes in the last six lines for yourself. Just read the lines out loud and listen for the matching sounds at the ends of the lines.
