Speaking personally, assembling the models that will make up my Warhammer army is one of my favorite aspects of the hobby, and the thing that for me distinguishes our models out as more than mere toys. A model is something that, as I stated earlier, you have made yourself. It is your vision, your expression that has crafted a model, whereas a toy no matter how beautiful will always be someone elses' vision. The model as a toy therefore is yours by more than dint of mere possession, in its assembly you have put your own stamp upon it, forever marking it out not just as a Warhammer toy, but as YOUR Warhammer toy. This is one of many reasons why this is one of the best war strategy game ever made.
Once you have built your first few models, your creative juices will be flowing, and your mind will be wondering how you can further stamp your mark upon the models. Welcome to the joys of conversion.
Conversion is a process that can be as simple or as complicated as you desire it to be. Ranging from a simple swapping of parts to give a miniature a different look, to an almost complete conversion, resulting in a model that bears little resemblance to the original. For many this is the pinnacle of the hobby, as it allows them to physically craft a narrative to the army they are building. For instance in my Chaos Space Marine army, the unit of Thousand Sons I am working on, rather than having the Egyptian look of the official miniatures, have been assembled using parts from several kits in order to give them a darker, more medieval appearance.
In this way, they are my Thousand Sons, sprung from my imagination, yet they will enjoy exactly the same performance on the table top as the official models. This is the beauty of conversion, for it allows you to breath such variety into your as to make is stand apart from those like it.
Another reason for conversion is that some players myself included find it easier to assemble plastic models, than they do metal models. Admittedly each offers different advantages, metal models provide a much greater scope for detail, useful when choosing a model to represent the hero or heroes of your army. Plastic on the other hand is much more malleable, allowing a skilled modeler to craft it into whatever form they like.
