The Life of Averroes: Ibn Rushd 1126 AD to 1198 AD
Culture and stimulating education surrounded Averroes since birth. His Grandfather Abul Walled Muhammed was an Imam of the Cordova Mosque, a Maliki theologian and was also chief judge in Cordova. Qasim Ahmad, was Averroes' father was a Qadi chief judge.
From an early age Averroes learned medicine, law, tradition and philosophy. One of his close friends was Avenzoar, a principal Islamic physician of Moorish Spain. His other peers were Ibn Zuhr, Ibn Baja and Abu Bakr ibn Tufail - the three became renown theorists of Moorish Spain.
Averroes possessed an acute and extraordinary logic. Other subjects studied were: astronomy, mathematics, rhetoric, literature,music and zoology. The Grand Cordovan library which held over 500,000 books, manuscripts and treatises enabled Averroes to developed as an extraordinary encyclopaedic genius.
Following the family footsteps Averroes became a Qadi judge in Sevilla 1160 AD. He married and eventually became chief judge in Cordova. Humanistic Beauty was at its height during that period. Ibn Tufail introduced Averroes to the Almohad Caliph Abu Ya'qub in 1169 AD.
Philosophy at that time was regarded an irreverent subject. Caliph Abu Ya'qub was fascinated with philosophy. He asked Averroes a question: "whether the heavens created - or not..."
Averroes despite his immense knowledge remained silent, bias ruled against his favour, should he answer. The moment proved to be a historic watershed.
The Caliph answered, himself.
Averroes was astounded, thus he revealed his mastery of philosophy. A fascinating conversation took place. The Caliph was deeply impressed.
Averroes returned home that night with a proposal to write a clear version of Aristotle's works. It took him many years and became a highly prestigious and unprecedented project in his already busy social and professional life.
When Ibn Tufail died in 1185 AD he had recommended that Averroes should replace him as personal physician to both Caliph Abu Ya'qub and his son Abu Ya'qub al-Mansur.
Averroes took over twenty-six years to complete his interpretation of Aristotle's works.
He wrote summaries, middle and long commentaries and sometimes, in all forms. His work was translated into Latin and surviving copies exist in Arabic and Hebrew
The intellectual legacy of Averroes served to influence Sephardic Jews and Medieval Europe Christians. Averroes visionary Scholasticism transformed ideological 'thought' processes during the next four centuries.
