Star Wars is one of the most pivotal science fiction stories ever to have been created. Regardless of if you're a fan or not the story has many meanings and draws upon elements of our own beliefs. The main theme is the constant fight between good and evil and the struggle to bring balance between them. This article will cover the story of the 6 primary movies and will progress in episode number, rather than the order they were first released.
Episode I deals with the discovery of Anakin Skywalker and the introduction of the trade federation. The current government is the Galactic Republic and the Jedi are seen at the height of their power. The story introduces key characters to the films including Obi-Wan Kenobi who is still a Padawan. The Sith are also introduced and it ends with a hint of further danger to come.
Episode II Returns to find the Republic facing a crisis. It has been several years since the events in Episode I and Anakin is a young man now. The trade Federation is gathering other planets in a plan to overthrow the Republic and several internal problems are reveled with the Jedi. Several key events happen in this film such as the death of Anakin's mother, the creation of the clone army, Anakin's love interest, and the beginning of the Clone Wars.
Episode III is the culmination of the act as the Republic is in a bitter war with the Separatist forces. Anakin is much older, and the orchestrator of the chaos is finally revealed. The movie ends with the death of Anakin's wife, the birth of his children Luke, and Leia, The destruction of the Jedi, The formation of the Galactic Empire, and Anakin's conversion to the dark side of the force.
Episode IV begins with a pair of droids being marooned on Tatooine. Once there they meet a young Luke Skywalker who is ignorant of his father, and the events before him. The film centers on an unlikely group of heroes trying to rescue a princess, and destroy the Empires Super Battle Station the Death Star. During the film Anakin (now known as Darth Vader) cuts down Obi-Wan Kenobi in battle, which inspires Luke to become a Jedi like his father.
Episode V deals with the aftermath of the Death Stars destruction. Luke travels to the planet Degobah to complete his training, and meets former Jedi council master Yoda. During the episode he learns the truth of his father, and vows to end the Empire, and save him. A few new friends are found, as well as some old ones lost.
Episode VI is the culmination of the arc known as The Galactic Civil War and focuses on the Destruction of the second Death Star. Luke has completed his training and with the help of his father kills the emperor. He redeems his father's soul and returns him to the light side of the force. He then rejoins his friends to celebrate their newfound freedom.
Star Wars is a massive story, with hundreds of books, dozens of video games, and many smaller series. It touches on events and meanings that strike a cord in us all and will be a classic for years to come.
