Every single living person is filled with it, we all just have different levels of sweetness.
I know if I eat lots of cookies and candy, cakes, pastries or pies, I am now eating lots of sugar. So does that kind of over-indulgence give me blood sugar?
I've always heard people with diabetes have blood sugar. Now you tell me I have blood sugar too. Does that mean I have diabetes?
Simple Definition Of Blood Sugar
Many of the foods we eat daily, when broken down during the digestive process, break down into either simple sugars (that's the cake, candies, cookies, fruit juices etc.) or complex carbohydrates(sugars) which includes items such as whole grain breads, rice, potatoes, pasta, high-fat dairy products plus many more.
All of these types of foods are known as carbohydrates. During digestion, a baked potato, a bowl of corn or cereal, a dish of watermelon, some baked beans or a plate of pasta all change to sugars during digestion. Your many organs then pull these sugars into themselves and use the components as your body's source of fuel. As your car needs gasoline, your body needs carbohydrates for efficient operation. Your brain, muscles, liver, eyes, heart and all others depend on the capability of your body delivering that necessary source of fuel - sugar!
So what's the problem then with diabetes if we all need sugar?
Each type of diabetes, whether it is type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes is an accumulation of too much, or too little sugars in the bloodstream. Our bodies were designed to process all the incoming sugars from the foods we eat.
A type 1 diabetic has difficulty processing these sugars though because they lack the hormone insulin. Insulin is needed to process all the sweets and carbohydrates which enter the system.
A type 2 diabetic often has enough sugars and insulin in their system, but their body has lost the capability of utilizing the insulin in combination with the sugars.. This is another way of saying they have plenty of sugars flowing through their bloodstream but different circumstances can lead to the organs being incapable of catching, keeping and utilizing those sugars for proper health. This is why medications are given to help any existing insulin (or a larger amount is given when needed) so it can then be more readily used to process the sugars in the blood.
The expectant mother in the throes of gestational diabetes is having difficulty then because the act of conceiving a child requires tremendous amounts of hormones. Often the mother is not capable of keeping up and meeting these requirements or she is having problems maintaining the proper levels of sugars in her system. Each of these circumstances needs outside intervention for her own health and the health of the baby.
So the term blood sugar is just a measurement of the amount of sugars which continually circulate through your bloodstream. A type 1 commonly has low blood sugar. Without constant monitoring and physically adding the hormone insulin to their system, this person will be playing around with their own death. As stated earlier, sugars are absolutely mandatory for human health.
A type 2 diabetic then may occasionally notice low blood sugar symptoms but their biggest obstacle to overcome and maintain is high blood sugars. Due to a malfunction in their system, the body's organs are not getting the proper amount of nourishment from all the sugars floating in their system. So again the organs are being starved for a component which is actually freely circulating in their body already. These high levels of excess sugar will lead to major complications with time in their future.
The expectant mother needs continuous monitoring for nutritional support for herself and her baby. Although it is usually an easily controlled condition when it has been "caught", the downside is often this diagnosis stages a recurrence of this condition later in the mother's life. It is usually found the mother, and possibly the child, will become a diagnosed diabetic later within their life.
Checking with your doctor for some easy blood tests and urine tests can give you an almost immediate answer if you have any indications where you may be noticing the early symptoms diabetes.
