Social networking is a growing part of today's society. Social networking websites function like an online community of internet users. Depending on the website in question, many of these online community members share a common interest such as hobbies, religion, or politics. My experience with social networking comes from the InCircle site here at Westwood. I use this site to meet new people who can give me an opportunity to enter the IT field. I already have enough friends, so the InCircle site I try to meet associates who can be beneficial to my future goals. There are people who can lead you in the right direction and help you out along the way. Business networking communities consist of people with common interests. Social networking sites are more so for exactly that socializing, such as MySpace and Facebook. Each site can be a useful tool depending on what your interests are, but mixed probably wouldn't be the best move. Our business aspirations are what keep us goal oriented, to make the mistake of integrating a personal relationship into our professional life could make one lose focus. Using InCircle you receive the opportunity to search jobs sites, network with industry professionals, and receive leads to up and coming job opportunities.
Now MySpace is solely for the purpose of meeting and greeting. Many of my friends and family are members. In the early 2000's MySpace was in our local news, pedophiles were using this unsecured site (at the time) to lure in young children. Since, "Tom" has made his site very secure with pass codes, user blocks and prohibiting the use of any form of nudeness or sexual content on this site. But there are still those that seem to find a way to abuse the system threw lude comments and blogs that seem childish and immature. One case in court right now, consists of two older women who started with these exact forms of abuse that inflamed to head on confrontation. Needless to say, who would in their right mind want to network at a professional level at this site? Yet there are some who do, if your promoting a new nightclub or concert this is defiantly the site for you, it's filled with young adults looking for a good time. Mixing business and pleasure is never a good idea on the professional level, this is where the differences in sites comes clear.
At MySpace people meet for the sole purpose to meet friends and others of the opposite sex, where at InCircle former Westwood Alum meet with each other to network and share professional information. Business is business and when you mix business with pleasure this only can lead to disaster. When you choose to engage in social networking there are specific web sites that can cater to your needs, so when you want to meet someone on a social level MySpace would be the choice and professionally InCircle would be a better fit.
