My struggle to find the meaning of the Sistine Chapel ceiling began on the day my wife Heera was killed in an accident. We had just started an 8,000 piece jigsaw puzzle of Michelangelo's masterpiece; so it was left to me to put all of the pieces back together.
At that point I still had no idea what I was working on. The ceiling looked like a sea of humanity with hundreds of people crammed together, many naked, most alive, some dead or about to be, people sitting, standing, or acting in narrative scenes. It looked as if it was a jigsaw puzzle itself waiting to be put together, although I could never find one single thread of meaning to connect all of the pieces.
It took me a year to finish the puzzle. As I put the pieces together I kept wondering what the ceiling was supposed to mean. Everything I read described the same basic elements: the nine Genesis scenes running down the spine, the seven Old Testament prophets and five pagan sibyls sitting on white marble thrones, the 40 generations of the Ancestors of Christ, and the four brutal corner stories about David, Judith, Ester, and the Bronze Serpent. But nothing I read ever talked about the ceiling's meaning.
Along the way I found the five volume set on the works of Michelangelo by Charles de Tolnay who spent more than 25 years studying the great artist. Certainly if anyone knew what the fresco cycle was supposed to mean it would be him. But here's what de Tolnay had to say about the ceiling:
"It is not a mere illustrative translation in the imagery of a given philosophic system, but a philosophy in itself-a creative synthesis in visual symbols of the transcendent idealism."
Somehow that explanation just didn't work for me. I was looking for a big Oh Wow moment when all would become clear to me, and de Tolnay didn't give me that.
That's when I concluded no one really knows for sure what the ceiling is supposed to mean, if anything, since Michelangelo never revealed his plan to anyone. Yet I could never accept that a man could spend four and a half years of his life painting a ceiling and not give it some greater meaning if only to himself.
Michelangelo was really good at hiding things. In fact, the first thing he did before he started to paint the ceiling was build a scaffold so no one could see what he was doing from the floor. Of course, that also meant he couldn't see his work from the floor either until the scaffold was taken down.
When I couldn't find the satisfying answer I was looking for reading about the ceiling I started reading about the man hoping to find something in Michelangelo's life that might help. That's when I discovered his life story is also something of a jigsaw puzzle. All of the pieces we have from his early years are ones he gave us. But when you string them together they don't make a whole lot of sense if you scratch the surface just a little.
So I scratched at the myths and made several trips to Florence and Rome searching for clues hoping to put the pieces of Michelangelo's life together in a way that did make sense. And once I found a way to do that, I began to see the Sistine Chapel ceiling in a whole new beautiful light.
David Clark's quest to solve the Sistine Chapel mystery started after his wife was killed shortly after they began a piece jigsaw puzzle of the ceiling. After five years of extensive research, he realized the ceiling is a brilliant diversion that hides a secret message by overwhelming the eye. Like a jigsaw puzzle it lures us to pull its hundreds of pieces together to make sense of the whole. However, its meaning cannot be found by putting the pieces together, but through finding the one piece Michelangelo left missing: the piece he lacks in his own life story.
